Cal Poly Pomona Makes a Difference!

About the contest

Cal Poly students are active in their community, making a difference through volunteering and service-learning. Now we want to know how -- and we want the world to know about the great things you're doing too, so we're sponsoring this contest.

  • Up to 2 Second and Third Prize Winners will receive a $250 Bronco Bookstore Gift Card
  • Up to 20 Honorable Mention Winners will receive a Canvas Messenger Bag
  • The first 100 entrants will receive either a insulated lunchbag or flying disk
  • All entrants will receive a Center for Community Service-Learning ballpoint pen

What You Should Write About

We're not looking for numbers, we're looking for real stories of personal and community transformation through service: What did you do in the community? Did it make a difference? How do you know? Just as important, what did you learn from the experience? How did you change because of it? Did it change how you view yourself, your place in the world, or your career? How?

We're especially interested in well-written, evocative narratives that make us feel like we were there, so focus on descriptions of specific events: conversations you had, descriptions of the setting, details about the people involved and what happened. If you were in a service-learning class, feel free to use the reflection essay you wrote for class as your entry.

We recommend that compose your essay in another program such as Word and cut it and paste it into the form. Well-written essays free of spelling and grammatical errors have a better chance of winning, so be sure to proofread!
